The difference between this trail and others
is that, apart from the world famous splendour in the scenic
surroundings of the Hex River Valley, it also provides an
educational adventure down memory lane. A large section of the 20km
(or up to 35km) expedition accompanies one of the very first railway
tracks in South Africa. This 3'6" railroad was built in the early
1870's and abandoned in 1989. |

Definitely the main attraction on the Two
Tunnels Mountain Bike Trail is the ride through one of the twin
tunnels through which the original railway line ran. There are
optional detours to the Kaffrarian Rifles Memorial (almost 900m
ASL), erected on the spot where ten British soldiers lost their
lives when their troop train derailed in 1914, and to Appaskop (850m
ASL) which offers breathtaking views of the Hex River Valley and the
Matroosberg Mountains.

|
The main route of about 20 km is moderate, but
includes a few steep climbs. Optional detours extend the route to
about 35km. While many serious mountain bikers enjoy the challenge
the trail has to offer, it is also quite suitable for family- and
group excursions.

The trail starts (and finishes) at the Veldskoen
Padstal (532m ASL) on the N1, 4.5km beyond De Doorns (travelling
from Cape Town). Turning right off the N1, the carefully designed
trail climbs moderately (about 300m in altitude) until it joins the
railway track, your silent companion for a large section of the
route. When the trail follows along the side of the mountain for a
few kilometres with very steep downhill on your left, an alternative
route is available for the fainthearted.
After experiencing
your adventure through the old tunnel, you may enjoy your picnic at
Tunnel station. From here the main route takes you back to Veldskoen
along an enjoyable road. The difficulty of this section allows you
to take in the breathtaking views.
From Tunnel station,
riders who prefer a longer route may take the 4km detour to the
Kaffrarian Rifles Monument, and/or the 10km detour to Appaskop to
enjoy the spectacular views.
|
|
Permits must be obtained at the Veldskoen Padstal.
This includes a map of the trail. Veldskoen is open 7 days a week
from 08:00 to 17:00.
Picnic facilities are available at Tunnel Station
(near the halfway mark). Accommodation facilities are available
throughout the region.
