It's difficult to find words to describe this experience. Not just excitement. A sense of exploration, yes! Reminiscence, yes! Bewildered by the scenery, yes! These are the sensations that we experienced as we boarded the Hexpas Express. Our guide talks enthusiastically about the history of this abandoned 3'6" railroad that negotiates the steep climbs of up to 1:40 of the Hex River Pass between Hexpas and Matroosberg stations. Built originally in the 1870's, but replaced by the new modern (and 8 km shorter) rail in 1989, this track runs through one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa. Read more about the history.
Two coaches (seating 6 and 18 adults respectively) are drawn by a vintage Fordson 35 horse power tractor. The tractor was adapted for the highest levels of security and comfort of the passengers when they travel at a maximum speed of about 20 km/h. Japie Januarie, the driver, grew up in a family who, for generations since the times of the S.A.R. & H. (South African Railways & Harbours), made their livelihood on this track.

The Hexpass Express offers three rides. A trip from Hexpas Station to Tunnel Station and back, including time to enjoy a picnic at Tunnel Station, takes about 4 hours. For the history enthusiast, a 5½ hour trip is offered from Hexpas Station to the Kaffrarian Rifles Monument (read about the history) and back. A third trip from Hexpas Station right up to the summit at Matroosberg Station, a beautifully restored small Karoo station, is also offered. Passengers on all the trips are shown the 130+ year old railway tunnel.

During the ride, the guide identifies some of the indigenous plants (including 'botterboom' and aloe) as well as some curious wildlife. The remains of British stone forts still guard the handmade cutting as they did during the Boer War in the early 1900s, and each century-old rock inscription on the walls of this cutting tells its own story.

Different seasons of the year provide different scenery. Winter offers snow-capped in every direction (remember to bring warm clothes), while autumn creates a breathtaking artist palette of colors as the world famous vineyards of the Hex River Valley prepares to shed their leaves.

Whether you want to bring the family on an unforgettable outing, spend the night as a corporate team, enjoy photography and arts, or enjoy a history filled trip, an opportunity to join an excursion on the Hexpas Express should not be missed.
