We, at Hexpas Ecotrek, strongly believe that our
heritage, both natural and historical, must be protected for future
generations. With each of the adventures we offer, we try to give
utterance to this philosophy: "The tracks of the past become the map
of the future".
Picturesque Hex River Valley
The Hex River Valley (130km from Cape Town) is
world-renowned for its natural beauty. During autumn the colours of
the vineyards remind one of an artist's palette, while winter takes
you to a small Switzerland among the snowcapped peaks.
Railroad History
The history of the Hex River Pass goes back to
the 1870's, when the discovery of diamonds near Kimberley, demanded
a regular and reliable transport system to and from the
Cape.
The first farms in the Hex Valley were granted
to settlers during the early 1700's. Many of those early Cape Dutch
homesteads were restored and maintained through the centuries as a
heritage for the generations. Now visitors to the Hex Valley are
able to embark down 'memory lane' to a selection of these excellent
specimens of vernacular architecture.
