HEXPASS EXPRESS
It's difficult to find words to describe this experience. Not just excitement. A sense of exploration, yes! Reminiscence, yes! Bewildered by the scenery, yes! These are the sensations that we experienced as we boarded the Hexpass Express. Our guide, Stephaan Jordaan talks enthusiastically about the history of this abandoned 3'6" railroad that negotiates the steep climbs of up to 1:40 of the Hex River Pass between Hexpass- and Matroosberg stations. Built originally in the 1870's, but replaced by the new modern (and 8 km shorter) rail in 1989, this track runs through one of the most beautiful areas in South Africa

Two coaches (seating 6 and 18 adults respectively) are drawn by a vintage Fordson 35 horse power tractor. The tractor was adapted for the highest levels of security and comfort of the passengers when they travel at a maximum speed of about 20 km/h. Both Hendrik, the driver and Japie, the brakesman, grew up in families who, for generations since the times of the S.A.R. & H. (South African Railways & Harbours), made their livelihood on this track.
The Hexpass Express offers two rides. A trip from Hexpass Station to Tunnel Station and back, including time to enjoy your (self-supplied) picnic at the tunnel, takes about 3 to 4 hours. For the history enthusiast, a 5 hour trip is offered from Hexpass Station to the Kaffrarian Rifles Monument (read about the history) and back. Passengers (on both trips) are allowed to walk through the 130+ year old railway tunnel. On the longer route, overnight camping facilities are available.
During the ride, Stephaan identifies some of the indigenous plants (including 'botterboom' and aloe) as well as some curious wildlife. The remains of British blockhouses still guard the handmade cutting as they did during the Boer War in the early 1900s, and each century-old rock inscription on the walls of this cutting tells its own story.
Different seasons of the year provide different scenery. Winter offers snow-capped in every direction (remember to bring warm clothes), while autumn creates a breathtaking artist palette of colors as the world famous vineyards of the Hex River Valley prepares to shed their leaves.
Whether you want to bring the family on an unforgettable outing, spend the night as a corporate team, enjoy photography and arts, or a historian, an opportunity to join an excursion on the Hexpass Express should not be missed.
